This project aims to collect the lullabies of Europe. Languages from
the Cradle is a direct response to the need for European citizens to
learn other European languages. The starting point of the project is
the recognition that the best way to learn or be introduced to a new
language is in the home.
The project will inspire and motivate young children and families to realize and appreciate the beauty of other European languages and the rich culture they represent. Many of us have experienced songs in foreign languages in childhood and for many of us these experiences are remembered in later life. The lullabies being collected in this project will serve the same purpose and lead to a resonance later in life.
The Languages from the Cradle project will result in a downloadable database of lullabies in European languages, translations and a cultural background. The repository will also be available on CD and DVD with a booklet. You can contribute to the project to reach a positive and successful conclusion; for example, maybe your school can sing a lullaby for the project, with the information on the background of lullabies. Please note, every contributor to the project will receive a free copy of the final products of the project (subject to limited availability). The project is funded by the European Union Socrates Lingua programme that aims to promote the learning of languages across Europe.
