Abstract
Bilingual Education: the Need to Take Account of the Context to Ensure the Sustainability of the Pedagogical System
In officially bilingual contexts such as some cantons in Switzerland, the possibility of offering learners a school programme in two languages is regularly questioned. Between the representations of the society, the position of politicians and the potential divergent opinions of the public and the teachers, the implementation of bilingual programme is a long and sensitive process. This paper proposes to study a range of conditions, from the political, didactic and societal spheres, by identifying the role of the institutions, the teachers and the learners. All this takes place in a well-defined context, holding naturally strong cultural and identity values.

Dans des contextes officiellement bilingues comme certains cantons suisses, la possibilité d'offrir aux apprenants un programme scolaire en deux langues est régulièrement remise en question. Entre les représentations de la société, la position des politiciens et les opinions potentiellement divergentes du public et des enseignants, la mise en œuvre d'un programme bilingue est un processus long et sensible. Cet article propose d'étudier un ensemble de conditions, issues des sphères politique, didactique et sociétale, en identifiant le rôle des institutions, des enseignants et des apprenants. Tout cela se déroule dans un contexte bien défini, porteur de valeurs culturelles et identitaires naturellement fortes.
