Drama and second / additional language learning (Call for papers)

RiDE: The Journal of Applied Theatre and Performance
www.informaworld.com/crde

Themed Issue: Drama and second / additional language learning

Editors: Madonna Stinson and Joe Winston

Research In Drama Education: the journal of applied performance invites articles that advance thinking about the connections between drama and second / additional language acquisition. Drama has traditionally had strong links with language learning. Testament to this is a diverse range of publications in both practice and research since the 1970s. In recent years the focus has broadened to include second and additional languages and research has begun dealing with issues of bilingualism, mulitlingualism, and intercultural understanding. This themed issue seeks to publish articles that investigate both theoretical and methodological issues relating to the use of drama in support of second and additional language learning. This growing field of activity is, as yet, under theorised and in need of strong research to inform advocacy and ongoing practice.

You are invited to submit a proposal of no more than 500 words for an article of approximately 5, 000 words in length.

Potential issues that you may wish to address include:
• Interrogation of theories of second / additional language learning that inform current practice;
• Reports of research initiatives in the application of drama pedagogy to second / additional language learning;
• Consideration of language policies in government and/or education;
• Challenges and possibilities for pedagogy and the art form in this specific field;
• Influences of location, culture, gender, needs of the learner/s, and life experience and how they impinge on theory and practice;
• Language and power and critical perspectives on how drama attempts to address this;
• Methodological concerns for research and language learning.

The deadline for the submission of a proposed paper is May 14th, 2010.

Authors will be informed by the editors as to whether they wish them to submit a full article by June 11th, 2010. First drafts of articles will be required by November 1st, 2010.
